Announced in conjunction with the vivo Y70s, the Exynos 880 chip is a simpler version of the Exynos 980 chipset aimed at the high-performance market, and while maintaining support for great features that are becoming essential, some sacrifices will be necessary. With an eight-core CPU, the new platform has two 2.0 GHz Cortex-A77 cores and six 1.8 GHz Cortex-A55 cores. It offers a Mali-G76 MP5 GPU and integrated neural processing unit (NPU). But one of its main features is to support the 5G sub-6 GHz. Because it is a “capped” version of the Exynos 990, the new Exynos 880 will offer reduced speed UFS 2.1 storage when compared to UFS 3.1 of Samsung’s most powerful models on the market today, and feature LPDDR4x RAM. It is also worth remembering that the chip is designed in 8 nanometer FinFET lithography. The company also confirms that smartphones equipped with the Exynos 880 will have support for a 64 MP camera, video recording capability in 4K UHD resolution with 30 fps HEVC, H.264 and VP9 encoding. Mobile phones that use this platform may adopt a screen with maximum resolution Full HD + (2520x1080p), but with a refresh rate of 60 Hz, since the official website omits information regarding the possible presence of rates of 90 Hz or higher. For now the vivo Y70s is the first smartphone equipped with the new chipset, but it is expected that new devices from other manufacturers and Samsung itself will be presented very soon with the novelty.
