Recently going through troubled times, Huawei introduced the new HiSilicon Kirin 820 5G chipset, which will focus on mid-range smartphones. Introduced as the successor of the Kirin 810 last year at the launch of the Honor 30S, Kirin 820 5G stands out with the fact that it will provide 5G support for budget-friendly phones. Produced using 7 nm processor technology similar to its predecessor, the chipset consists of 4 ARM Cortex-A76 cores and 4 ARM Cortex-A55 cores. At this point, one of the ARM Cortex-A76 cores in the chipset operates at 2.36 GHz while the other three operate at 2.22 GHz. The chipset on which ARM Cortex-A55 cores run at 1.84 GHz thus offers up to 27% performance increase compared to the previous generation. Kirin 820 5G will offer a huge performance boost compared to the previous generation: As for the graphics processing unit, the Kirin 820 5G uses the Mali-G57 6-core GPU, which offers approximately 38% better performance than the Mali-G52 GPU in the Kirin 810. The enhanced GPU also offers support for GPU Turbo and Kirin Gaming + 2.0. Huawei also included the NPU (Neural-network Processing Unit) unit, which increased its AI performance by 73% compared to the older generation, on the Kirin 820 5G. Kirin 820 5G with Kirin ISP 5.0 will be able to perform DSLR-quality visual noise reduction, just like the flagship Kirin 990, and will implement it thanks to its new filtering algorithm called BM3D. Kirin ISP 5.0 will also allow devices with this chip to record 4K video at 60 FPS. The chipset uses the same modem as Kirin 990, which supports dual-mode SA / NSA 5G to offer 5G features to the user. At this point, the Honor 30S, introduced today, is the first smartphone with the new Kirin 820 5G chipset.
